Okay they're still pretty messy and don't have many books in yet, but I think the metal shelves were a great choice.  Very inexpensive which suits their temporary status.

architecture of thomas the train

maybe i'm just a fool for depth-of-field.  i do love these miniature vernacular buildings though.  once you get past the fact that the trains have faces, thomas the train is pretty nice visually.

MACro

the new[ish] iphone takes pretty nice macro shots!  these were tough because it was really windy and these thistles kept blowing around so the focus wasn't always where i expected.   but depth of field in an iphone photo... that's fun.

PSFS versus Glendale Federal

Howe and Lescaze's PSFS tower [1932] in Philadelphia has made it into the canon of great buildings as the first International Style skyscraper.

I've always been a huge fan of PSFS, but I'm also a great fan of the Glendale Federal Savings building from 1959.   It has functioning adjustable louvers to provide shade, bold use of color, and the building has always reminded me in some way of PSFS.

George Bernard Shaw's tiny rotating office

this minuscule office could pivot to follow the sun throughout the day.

this website has a few nice photos

I first learned of this tiny building from Les Walker's Tiny Book of Tiny Houses, which is a favorite of mine.

Abstract Expressionists postage stamps

The USPS has come out with a great series of stamps.  As my friend Meera points out, these may be a bit tough to use as they are so nice.  Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hoffman, Barnett Newman, and Joan Mitchell.

you might think these beach houses are just about form, but look at that space!  what nice light and simple honest materials.

backyard chickens

The progress on my chicken coop is quite slow now, but it really is nearly done.  As soon as the City of Palo Alto approves the henhouse and run, I'll be more focused about where to get the chickens.

The Barred Plymouth Rock is just a beautiful bird, and they are reputedly quite friendly.

We'll also have one hen that lays blue or green eggs, though these are a bit more tricky.  There are lots of mixed breeds that just might lay green eggs but then again they might not and the only way to tell is to bring it home and wait to see.  I think I am too picky for that.  So it may be mail-order time, though it would be ideal to get the chicks locally.

nice fireplace

this fireplace and log storage area is totally gorgeous with the board-formed concrete wall at the back, and log storage tucked into the same long niche.
